One, two, three…77, 78… 85, 86! That was us at Hassett Auto sympathizing with the technicians who will be bringing pieces of the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. Why embark on such an arduous task? The Mustang is celebrating 50 years on April 16 and 17, and nothing short of history-making will do.
Just as it began almost 50 years ago, the all-new ‘Stang convertible will be featured on the 86th floor observatory for fans and passersby to admire and soak in the rich heritage.
Obviously, the crew won’t be lugging the precious cargo up 86 flights of stairs. As in 1965, a Mustang will be divided into elevator-friendly slices. Once all parts reach the 86th floor, the crew will have just six hours to put it back together again.
“Like all good craftsmen, our team is measuring twice and cutting once to make sure we can get this Mustang up in the elevators,” said Dave Pericak, chief engineer for the Mustang.
“Like the team that did this in 1965, the current crew visited the Empire State Building before starting and took careful measurements of its new elevators and doors before cutting up the car.”
If you’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary with a trip to New York on April 16 –17, be sure to visit the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building for a sneak peek at the 2015 Mustang before it goes on sale later this year. We know it will be a glorious sight.
